There is no submit button for a ChatGPT citation

A care provider cannot buy a permanent place in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer. These systems assemble responses from sources they can retrieve and judge useful for a particular question. The cited pages can change when the wording, location, context or available web content changes.

The practical goal is not to chase a secret AI ranking factor. It is to make your organization and its best information accessible, understandable, verifiable and worth citing. That work is called answer engine optimization, or AEO, and generative engine optimization, or GEO. Both begin with the same strong foundation as SEO.

Start with access

An answer engine cannot cite a page it cannot retrieve. Check robots.txt, server rules, security tools and JavaScript rendering to make sure legitimate search crawlers can reach the public content. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search discovery, while Perplexity identifies PerplexityBot for its search results. User-requested visits can use separate user agents.

The technical baseline:
  • Public pages return a successful response to standard search and AI search crawlers.
  • Important answers appear in the rendered HTML, not only after an interaction or inside an image.
  • Every useful page has one canonical URL and is included in the internal link structure and sitemap.
  • Headings, lists, tables, labels and page landmarks describe the content clearly.
  • The mobile site is fast, readable and accessible to people using keyboards, screen readers and automated agents.

Crawler access controls search discovery, but each platform may use separate controls for model training. Make that policy decision deliberately rather than copying a generic robots file.

Answer one real care question at a time

AI systems are often used for multi-part decisions rather than two-word searches. A family might ask which kind of care fits a parent, what it costs in a town, how soon it can start and which providers meet the conditions. One shallow services page cannot answer all of that well.

Map pages to the questions closest to action:
  • Service pages explain who the care is for, what a visit or stay includes, limits and how the process starts.
  • Location pages show genuine coverage, local response details, nearby resources and the correct contact path.
  • Pricing and payment pages publish useful ranges, what changes the price and which benefits or programs apply.
  • Comparison pages explain choices such as home care versus assisted living without forcing every reader toward one answer.
  • Process pages show what happens during an assessment, tour, referral, move-in or first week of service.

Create source material, not a summary of summaries

A page becomes more useful when it contains information that comes from the provider's own work. That might be a transparent starting rate, an intake timeline, a service area response standard, a named program leader, original photographs, a checklist used by staff or a clearly explained policy. Generic prose that could appear on any provider site gives a system little reason to cite yours.

Useful firsthand evidence can include:
  • Current pricing ranges and a date showing when they were reviewed.
  • Who wrote or reviewed clinical, regulatory or payment information and why they are qualified.
  • Original answers from intake, nursing, operations or community leadership.
  • Local details such as coverage boundaries, referral contacts, nearby hospitals and realistic response times.
  • A plain explanation of where the provider is not the right fit.

Accuracy matters more than volume. Review facts on a schedule, show meaningful update dates and remove unsupported claims. A wrong payment rule or outdated service area damages a family and weakens the site's trust.

Make the organization easy to verify

A strong page needs a clear source behind it. Keep the legal or public business name, address or service area, phone, leadership, licenses where relevant and service descriptions consistent across the website and reputable outside profiles. Link authors and reviewers to useful biographies. Use organization, service, article and location structured data when it accurately describes visible content.

Structured data helps systems understand a page, but it does not make a weak claim true and it is not a special AI ranking switch. The visible page, the organization behind it and independent confirmation still have to agree.

Earn a third-party footprint

AI answers can draw from more than the provider's own site. Accurate government listings, licensing databases, professional associations, local organizations, referral partners and reputable press can help confirm the entity and its work. Reviews can also help families, but they must be genuine and handled without exposing private health information.

Do not manufacture mentions, publish fake expert profiles or buy a collection of low-quality articles that repeat the same claim. A smaller set of relevant and independent references is more defensible than a large footprint built to imitate trust.

Write for retrieval and for a human decision

A citation-ready answer is usually easy to extract and easy to evaluate:
  • Lead with the direct answer before the sales message.
  • Use descriptive headings that match the questions families ask.
  • Separate facts, ranges, exceptions and next steps into short readable sections.
  • Name the location, service, audience and date when those details change the answer.
  • Link to the service or contact page that lets a reader verify availability and act.

Do not flatten the entire site into short answers. Families still need context, reassurance, tradeoffs and proof. The best page gives a system a clear passage to retrieve while giving the person enough information to make a safer decision.

Measure signals that can be observed

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes those visits identifiable in analytics. Perplexity referrals can be grouped by source. Google may provide AI search reporting through Search Console where that report is available. Track the landing pages, actions and qualified inquiries associated with those visits.

You can also test a fixed set of high-value questions on a schedule and record which sources appear. Treat this as a sample, not an official rank tracker. Generated answers vary, and a single favorable result is not a durable position.

A useful monthly view includes:
  • Visits and assisted conversions from identifiable AI sources.
  • Pages that receive AI referrals and the questions those pages answer.
  • Citations observed across a stable sample of care and location questions.
  • Qualified calls, forms, tours and assessments influenced by those pages.
  • New evidence, page improvements and third-party references completed that month.

A care provider AEO and GEO checklist

  • Allow legitimate AI search crawlers and verify that the important pages return complete HTML.
  • Define the services, locations, payment options and decision questions the provider can answer firsthand.
  • Improve the strongest existing pages before creating a large new content plan.
  • Add original facts, qualified review, useful dates and clear limitations.
  • Connect organization, author, service and location information consistently on and off the site.
  • Use structured data that matches visible content and maintain clean canonical URLs and internal links.
  • Measure identifiable referrals and care inquiries, then sample citations without promising permanent rankings.
  • Refresh facts and expand only when there is new value to add.

You do not need hundreds of AI-written pages or an llms.txt file sold as a cure. You need a technically accessible site, real subject knowledge and answers that are easier to verify than the generic alternatives.
